- After touring the European continent for nine months, Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals booked a week in a studio in Paris and recorded the entirety of Harper's eighth album, LIFELINE. By the end of a lengthy tour, a good band is simultaneously tight and loose, able to easily navigate any twists their leader throws at them, and that quality is all over LIFELINE. Largely recorded live to tape with minimal overdubs, LIFELINE has the live, fresh sound of 1970s album rock classics like Jackson Browne's RUNNING ON EMPTY, as well as a pronounced R&B influence that has never been so prominent on Harper's previous albums. Highlights include the bluesy shuffle "Fight Outta You," the Rolling Stones-like rocker "Put It On Me," and the title track, a solo acoustic performance by Harper that's one of his most personal and affecting songs. The album is also available in a special deluxe edition that includes a bonus DVD.
Professional Reviews Rolling Stone (p.87) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "The performances sound confident and natural....Harper was born to make records like LIFELINE. He sings in a grainy tenor of surprising range."
Spin (p.129) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Ben Harper eases into a more fluid, evenly paced groove on his eighth LP....Commanding..."
Entertainment Weekly (p.79) - "LIFELINE thankfully favors songs over jamming....Just add applause." -- Grade: B+
Q (Magazine) (p.116) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "LIFELINE has a warm, languid intimacy that taps into the Otis Redding and Stevie Wonder records he grew up on."
