Performer Notes
  • The Arcade Fire: Win Butler (vocals, acoustic guitar, electric 12-string guitar, piano, synthesizer, bass guitar); Regine Chassagne (vocals, accordion, recorder, piano, synthesizer, xylophone, drums, percussion); Howard Bilerman (guitar, drums); Richard Reed Parry (accordion, piano, organ, synthesizer, xylophone, double bass, percussion); William Butler (synthesizer, xylophone, bass instrument, percussion).
  • This Montreal ensemble's fiery debut is marked by surging guitars, soulful strings, driving drums, brilliant bass lines, and the quavering vocals of married couple Win Butler and Regine Chassagne. The group's song structures careen through a vast territory of musical and personal history, with lyrics warm with memories of childhood neighborhoods and deceased loved ones, resulting in an alternating current of joy and sadness.
  • Favorably compared to the Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, and Broken Social Scene, the Arcade Fire's sound seems to come from a lifetime of listening to the Cure, Talking Heads, Elvis Costello, and many others--even a dose of soul gets worked into these grand anthems. Chassagne delivers some spellbinding vocals on "Haiti," while the tinkling piano and strings on "Crown of Love" conjure up a heartbroken surfside prom. In 2004, this made many critics' year-end lists, and it's no wonder--the songs on FUNERAL are so packed with unique instrumentation, mesmerizing build-ups, and galvanizing tempo changes that they seem culled from some enigmatic, decade-spanning rock anthology.

5 of 5 Stars! Customer review on 27/12/2006

this is pretty much the essential album that you should own if you are into indie music. the arcade fire have really left a good impression and everyone thinks so. they are constantly getting great music reviews, they sound awesome live too. get into them if you aren't already, it's an album you won't regret buying.

3 of 5 Stars! Customer review on 23/12/2006

This is quite a cool cd. It does get a little tedious the more you listen to it though. All the neighbourhood tracks are really great. When i first got this cd by arcade fire i couldnt get enough of it but now i find it hard to listen through the whole album without skipping songs.

4 of 5 Stars! Customer review on 10/12/2006

the more i listen to this album the less i like it. upon first listen its a great melancholic trip through the concept of the funeral. upon second listen it becomes a bit well... boring. This is not to say that this isnt well worth a listen or buying as its a very good cd, just one that you need to save for special occasions or something like that otherwise its brilliance is lost.

5 of 5 Stars! Customer review on 29/10/2006

"Funeral" is one of those albums that upon first hearing, you know you've been waiting a long time for something like it to come along and fall upon your ears. While the songs on "Funeral" work well on their own, the album works best as an emotional story about family and relationships. Great musicianship, excellent song writing, a perfect blend of old and new musical ideas - certainly one of the best albums for its year.

5 of 5 Stars! Customer review on 16/08/2006

this album is a really wicked one with many great songs that stand out to me as classic in the indie rock genre. my favourites on here are ALL the neighbourhood tracs plus rebellion (lies), wake up and crown of love. this album has recieved alot of attention and they deserve to be checked out.

4 of 5 Stars! Customer review on 13/08/2006

this really is a brilliant cd. The arcade fire is an awesome indie rock band which i enjoy allot. although the songs do get a bit repetitive (in my eyes) it os a good listen none the less. Any die hard indie fan would love this cd. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT

4 of 5 Stars! Customer review on 26/05/2006

Funeral was one of the more unlikely success stories of last year. A strange multilayered and rather etherial creations from a Canadian ensemble that is a concept albumn of sorts inspired by the deaths of relatives of the band members. Its strange and rather lovely stuff, not easy to get into but rewarding once you do.
