Death Cab For Cutie: Christopher Walla, Benjamin Gibbard, Jason McGerr, Nicholas Harmer.
Recording information: Longview Farms, North Brookfield, Massachusetts.
The success of Death Cab For Cutie's TRANSATLANTICISM, and Death Cab main man Ben Gibbard's debut album with the Postal Service, combined to make PLANS one of the most heavily anticipated indie-rock records in many moons. Anyone who thought the band's move to a major label would rob DCFC's unique brand of literate, melancholy music of its legendary intensity needn't have worried--PLANS is one of the group's most accomplished and emotionally resonant efforts.
Sonically, the disc has a Beatlesque anything-goes attitude and attention to arrangement details. "Summer Skin" is driven by a military-style snare pattern and elliptical bass line but sprinkled with atmospheric sound effects. The throbbing dance-rock beat of "Different Names" is offset by delicate xylophone and percolating synthesizer. The disc's highlight, however, may be "Someday You Will Be Loved," which is the kind of simple, irony-free love ballad that stands as a great song with or without production tricks. All the while, Gibbard's artful, introspective lyrics consistently excite the ear with quirky turns of phrase and descriptive imagery. Both a step forward and a refining of past glories, PLANS is a record filled with quietly powerful moments.

Personally, I don't see how everyone finds this album so cheerful - to me it's one of the most depressing records I've ever heard. Not to say I don't like it, but to me, pretty much all the songs are very depressing-sounding, with the exception of 'Crooked Teeth', which is probably my favourite track off the album, which is cheerful, but to me, in an extremely bittersweet way (which I find even more depressing, usually). However, the album's great! If you don't know Death Cab, this is probably considered their most 'mainstream' work, so it's a great place to jump in, and to other Death Cab fans, don't listen to your pathetic scene friends - Death Cab haven't 'sold out' and this album is great!
Don't be fooled by the "death" in their name! They are not heavy or dark like other bands that associate themselve with "death". Their songs are so cheerful, joyful and happy, their songs are so "cute" and that's what makes them so unique and awesome! They are absolute geniuses by incorporating dark words into such happy songs :)
this is my first album that i have heard from death cab for cutie, and i must say i was extremely impressed. it is not heavy metal and i liked that, i found it funny how they managed to weave lyrics about death and other morbid things into such cheerful and light hearted tunes. highly recommonded you should buy this
plans is death cab's best album i think. they have really branched out on this one with some really original and great sounding tracks that are very pleasing to the ear. amoungst the more slow, downbeat tracks are a few more upbeat songs which are a refreshing change. an awesome mix of songs. i recommend it.
This album is amazing. I got started on 'The Postal Service' and a friend recommended I get onto the vocalist other band - Death Cab For Cutie. I am very happy to report it is wonderful! Favourite songs include 'Different Names For The Same Thing' (uplifting AS as if goes on!) and 'I Will Follow You Into The Dark' (A beautiful/acoustic vocal song). Well worth the purchase! I would also recommend the 'Directions' version of this album, which is in DVD format.
