Country purists may take offense at finding American Idol winner Carrie Underwood's debut album in the country section. An unabashedly manufactured commercial product, SOME HEARTS is the sound of mainstream country in the 2000s heavily steeped in glossy pop. There's nothing downhome or roots-conscious about Underwood's voice or looks: she's the pretty blonde next door with a fine singing voice, but the powers that be have made her a country artist, and that's what the public gets.
None of this is to say that SOME HEARTS is not a good pop album. The combination of Underwood's considerable gift and the slick, spot-on production of Dan Huff and Mark Bright makes for a fine package. Even on somewhat by-the-numbers tunes (like her smash hit "Inside Your Heaven"), Underwood sings with conviction, and she does well with both the ballads and the uptempo tracks. Idol viewers and fans of artists like Faith Hill and Shania Twain will want to check this out.

excellent album from american idol winner carrie underwood. underwood was a real hit on the show, and followed up her success with advertising contracts with skechers. she also managed to pump out this amazing album, which after one listen will fairly have you hooked! her voice is smooth, and she sings the songs on here with passion. a must own.
Carrie Underwood is so incredible. i love her voice, and her music is so mellow and down-to-earth. it is great for anyone to listen to, and i can tell that she is going to go far in her musical career, as it is rare that an 'idol' winner really goes all the way and records lots of amazing songs. its usually just a one-hit wonder, with the exception of kelly clarkson. so yes, carrie underwood is awesome!
I remember when I first saw Carrie Underwood on American Idol. She was carrying a bucket of milk wearing a T shirt, and was on her father's farm. She radiated a cleaness and pureness ... the wholesome farm girl. That is also in her album.
This album has given me the inspiration to live knowing that the wheel of my life is controlled by God and we should all live with the faith knowing that once God is in control we are safe, when we become too independent and take control, accidents can happen. This is a great CD. Carrie Underwood does not sound like a beginner. She was given good material to sing & she did a good job on each song.
This is one of the best CDs I've purchased in awhile.
Carrie underwood has an undeniably beautiful voice and many of you may remember her as the cute blonde who didnt quite make it to the end on a season of American Idol. Some hearts, while a great cd, errs more on the pop side of country music so maybe not one for any hardcore country fans!
amazingly talented artist. great songs that are very heartfelt and beautifully paces music. people of all ages with 100% love this cd as it is a timeless record to add to your collection. definatley reccomend forking out some money for this one because its totally a keeper! possibly one of the most talented idols ever!
I think that Carrie did an absolutely amazing job on this record! It did take a long time to be released, which I think was a good idea! It allowed the tracks to be perfected in a way that most Idol songs aren't. She also seemed to shake the American Idol aspect off her - it's hard to believe she was ever involved with Idol at all. I love the country feel that she brings. Even from the cover you know it's going to be worth listening to. I give her a standing ovation.
Like all American Idol produced albums, there is always some inconsistency with production and etc... There is the slightest bit of this on Carrie's album. We first began to truly see this with Fantasia's exceptional debut, Ruben sophomore effort (better than his debut Soulful), and of course multi-platinum pop-rocker Kelly Clarkson's Grammy deserving Breakaway. SOME HEARTS presents a truly credible country album without the American Idol aspect attached, which may mark the first American Idol debut to officially shed that image.
Carrie's debut is just as expected-a country set that has some pop sensibilities. The emphasis is on some because for the most part, this album will appeal to those who loved Carrie on American Idol as well as those who love a good country album. The pop sensibility comes with such a track as the excellent "Some Hearts" which features driving guitars, slick production and Carrie rising to a high E. Despite that, Carrie sings her heart out on this appropriate title track.
On her opening track "Wasted", as with ever American Idol album, Carrie's grabs the audience's attention with a well written selection that shows off Carrie's pure upper register. That is followed by an incredibly country influenced "Don't Forget to Remember Me", which isn't a bad track, but it slightly lessens the heightened momentum created by the great "Wasted". Nonetheless, that is where "Some Hearts" and the touching first single "Jesus Take The Wheel," which is made of a stunning piano, string, and electric guitar driven arrangement, throw the album back into full swing. Other notable highlights from SOME HEARTS include "Before He Cheats" which uses a bluesy production sound mixed with the first time that I've personally heard Carrie achieve some much needed grit to her pure voice. Selections "Whenever Your Remember" and "I Ain't in Chocatoe No More" also steal the show. There are some other tracks of less notability, yet it is important to note that this album is consistent for the most part lending many great tracks besides the major ones such as "We're Young and Beautiful" and "Starts with Goodbye".
While this album has a few flaws (Carrie over sings slightly on "When you're Beautiful"), for the most part it is well produced, Carrie's pitch is impeccable, and it is just a fine, well rounded debut. Where this album is concerned- a big fat 4 stars from a non-Carrie fan for this very fine debut.
Carrie Underwoods claim to fame was as the beautiful country singer on american idol. since then her profile has sky rocketed and she now endorses sketchers and has become hugely popular. i believe carrie is as good as faith hill, if not better and is one of the top female country singers around at the moment!
country all the way baby. its great to see some young people in the country music scene. its refreshing. carrie was on american idol and although not winning she has a blooming music career. i think this will be the future for where music is heading. top notch
