Performer Notes - Snow Patrol: Gary Lightbody (vocals).
- Following up its 2004 breakthrough album, FINAL STRAW, the Ireland-bred/Scotland-based rock band Snow Patrol opted for an even more accessible sound on EYES OPEN. Frontman Gary Lightbody has always shown a penchant for crafting pop-savvy tunes, but this 11-track set takes his songwriting to new heights, as best revealed on the energetic anthems "You're All I Have" and "Hands Open." While these songs display grandeur on the scale of U2 and Coldplay, Lightbody also knows how to ease into a tender ballad, most notably the chiming "You Could Be Happy," which features delicate Bjork-like backing. Though much of the record is upbeat, Lightbody's melancholy sensibility still comes into play on the brooding "Shut Your Eyes" and "Set Fire to the Third Bar," a haunting duet with Martha Wainwright. Longtime fans may miss Snow Patrol's indie-pop quirkiness (a la "Get Balsamic Vinegar...Quick You Fool" from SONGS FOR POLARBEARS), but in its place is a mature and assured approach that is sure to appeal to a wide audience.
Professional Reviews Rolling Stone (p.98) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "EYES OPEN is even more decadently cushy, setting chiming guitars, strings and electronics under Gary Lightbody's aching croons."
Q (p.125) - Ranked #18 in Q Magazine's "100 Greatest Albums of 2006" -- "[H]ere's where the Northern Irish five-piece left their indie roots behind and started to look like world contenders."
Mojo (Publisher) (p.108) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Snow Patrol have delivered an album big on lighter-waving anthems and arms-around-your-best-mate camaraderie."

– Customer review on 17/07/2008 Great album - the songs grow on you over time. I already had this album but the song on Grey's Anatomy propelled me to re listen to it.

– Customer review on 16/07/2007 excelletn album from snow partrol, who are not newcomers to the music scene, yet have fairly burst onto it lately, with hit songs on greys anatomy, and now the radio scene. this is a good band to get into if you enjoy the musical likes of muse etc. so many good songs on here, this is a great cd to pop on if you have had a hard day etc. love the song You're All I Have!

– Customer review on 15/07/2007 i absolutely love the song hands open by snow patrol. its a shame it hasn't had as much air play as chasing cars. chasing cars is a 'nice' song but is way over played and i feel that it has lost it effect. this album is a good listen. they have grown up a lot since the last album and thats rather worth listening to.

– Customer review on 05/07/2007 Set The Fire To The Third Bar is my favourite track on the epic album by snow patrol. The highly popular indie mellow band has captured fans and newbies a like with the album eyes open. Almost everyone will recognise the hit track chasing cars aswell!

– Customer review on 05/07/2007 perhaps the last review is a little sick of snow patrol being played everywhere, tv shows, radio, cafes. however i disagree, it's a pretty good album. especially hands open. if you discovered this band on commercial radio, you'd be pleased with the follow up singles. as opposed to hinder, for example, who will fade quickly and thank their luck for being able to write one song that got flogged on the air. if you like one of snow patrols songs you won't be dissapointed with the rest

– Customer review on 11/06/2007 If it wasn't for the equally crap TV show Grey's Anatomy playing that eternally boring Chasing Cars this album wouldn't have been nearly so popular.
Snow Patrol have never had anything worthy to offer the world of music and Eyes Open is no exception.
From beginning to end if you get that far you will not be offered anything of substance nor memorable.
Eyes Open, clearly another just for the fans.

– Customer review on 18/05/2007 to be honest, i do prefer snow patrol's previous albums and music rather than their latest, eyes open. there are some great songs on here, but there are know fantastic tracks like 'somewhere a clock is ticking' is on final straw. if you like the radio singles though, you'll love the album.

– Customer review on 17/04/2007 snow patrol's eyes open is a great album, it has alot of good songs on it which reflect their superb musical talent. i do, however, prefer their album final straw as a lot of their better songs are on that album in my opinion. but if you like the songs on here that you have heard on the radio, then i recommend the album to you.

– Customer review on 24/03/2007 snow patrol is perhaps one of the greatest alternative rock bands in this century, and they prove thier talent in eyes open, a great album. they received lots of attention especialy after popular tv show greys anatomy played one of their songs chasing cars in a big final episode scene. listen to it!
