Performer Notes
  • Foo Fighters: Dave Grohl (vocals, guitar); Chris Shifflet (guitar); Nate Mendel (bass); Taylor Hawkins (drums).
  • Recorded in Virginia.
  • ONE BY ONE won the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Rock Album. "Times Like These" was nominated for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. "All My Life" won the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance. "All My Life" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Rock Song.
  • Initial pressings included a bonus DVD.
  • In between manning drums for the Queens Of The Stone Age album SONGS FOR THE DEAF and the 2003 all-star death metal side-project Probot, Dave Grohl turned out ONE BY ONE, the Foo Fighters' fourth studio outing. With the Foo's line-up remaining intact for the second consecutive album, Grohl's posse set about sanding down the lighter, pop-inflected nuances of the album's predecessor THERE IS NOTHING LEFT TO LOSE. From the opening cut/lead single "All My Life," the Foo Fighters serve notice that amps are cranked and guitars are far beyond being set on stun. This intense outpouring of energy manifests itself well on the simmering tension of "Low," buzzing melodicism of "Times Like These (One-Way Motorway)," and the drill-press relentlessness of "Have It All."
  • Taking a page from the book of his former group Nirvana, Grohl has fun playing around with dynamics particularly on the bipolar subtle/screaming "Disenchanted Lullaby" and "Lonely As You," a chugging number that seamlessly goes from a lightly strummed intro to churning riffs. The biggest highlights include "Tired," a strummed ballad featuring multi-layered choruses by Queen guitarist Brian May, and closer "Come Back," a prog-flavored seven-minute-plus epic that meanders between soaring passages and segments soaked in angst-laced brio.

times like these is a favourite foo fighters song of mine, and it's here on this album. one by one is a classic album by the band, and although it's not my favourite release of theirs, its definately up there. awesome work from foo fighters. an amazingly talented band, they could never go wrong in my books.

I actually love this album, I think it's great!! It took a bit of getting used to though. The first few listens I was unsure of it, and then alot of the songs grew on me. I love the song "Low," it's dark and driven (steer clear of the video though, argh it's gross.

One by one is a great cd but i wouldn't say it is the best album the foo fighters have ever made. It contains one of my favourite foo fighters song "all my life" and a few other classics by the band but personally i prefer some of their other cds with a little more variety.

The album starts out strong enough, with the debut single "All My Life" following the rock formula Grohl's gotten so accustomed to using (whisper a few words, then sing, then scream. Repeat). And while this formulaic approach to songwriting may tend to lead to a feeling of repetition and monotony, each song does stand extremely well in the context of the album as well as individually. "Have It All" and "Halo" are proof enough of this. And then there's the ballad-esque and jaded "Disenchanted Lullaby" - it's one of the finer points on the disc, if for no other reason that it helps to break things apart a wee bit.

3 of 5 Stars! Customer review on 30/10/2006

One by one, by the Foo fighters is not really their best cd, their music in this is kinda a bit more up beat and winging. But Dave Ghrol is an amazing musician and has come a long way since his Nirvana escapades. But this cd is a really good one, just a bit repetative.

one by one is a pretty awesome album by the foo fighters, although not my favourite. it has teh well-known and much loved trakcs on here times like these and all my life. get this if you're a pretty big fan of teh foo fighters, otherwise go for another album of theirs like the colour and the shape.

to me, this is probably one of their better albums throughout their career, it contains such well known songs as All My Life and Times Like These (One-Way Motorway). other great songs on one by one are Disenchanted Lullaby, Lonely As You and tired of you. its great to own i you're a big fan of the band.

3 of 5 Stars! Customer review on 26/07/2006

The weakest foo fighters release to date. If you are a fan then it is worth buying as it contains a lot of decent songs but if you are new then i suggest buying the album 'there is nothing left to loose' it's much better. This album is heavier than the foo fightes other releases. Stand out tracks are 'times like these' and 'all my life.' You can probalby find the album cheaper than what it is here.

4 of 5 Stars! Customer review on 20/07/2006

You can’t knock Dave Grohls song writing ability, this album is yet more proof that he is a man of immense talent. In saying this, ‘One By One’ is probably the weakest album to date. All the songs are good, there is just no huge spark such as “Monkey Wrench” or “Breakout”. “Tired of You” bears the guitar work of Brian May from the ‘Queen’ fame, and is one of the best tracks on the album. The closer “Come Back” rages on (in a good way). This is a decent album, I only suggest if your new to the Foo Fighters go with ‘The Colour and the Shape’ or ‘Nothing Left to Lose” over this.

5 of 5 Stars! Customer review on 04/04/2006

Probably the greatest modern rock band around this is just another amazing album from Foo Fighters. I love their fast and energetic songs, you can tell that they actually care about their music. Songs to look out for include the hits "times like these", "all my life" and less well known ones like "disenchanted lullaby" A must have for any true music lover
