The Beatles: George Harrison (vocals, guitar, sitar); John Lennon (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Paul McCartney (vocals, guitar, piano, bass); Ringo Starr (vocals, organ, drums).
Additional personnel: George Martin (piano); Mal Evans (organ).
Though some might argue that the Beatles' unprecedented evolution from British Invasion pin-ups to pop music visionaries began with BEATLES FOR SALE, RUBBER SOUL is without a doubt the first album to definitively put the Fab Four in the running for Greatest Band Ever. Virtually every aspect of the Liverpool quartet's incredibly diverse sound is in evidence here: the dark, irony-filled Dylanism ("Norwegian Wood," "Nowhere Man"), pop perfection ("In My Life"), the passion for classic tin pan alley balladry ("Girl," "Michelle"), and the love of good 'ol rock & roll music ("Drive My Car"). Peppered with nasty fuzz bass, exotic sitar, cartoonishly sped-up piano that sounds like harpsichord, and elements of country, Motown, and classical music, the album reveals a creative scope and willingness to experiment so revolutionary it can now only be termed "Beatlesque." Though the Fabs don't go as far out on a limb here as on the more overtly experimental REVOLVER, RUBBER SOUL is perhaps the Beatles' most finely crafted and accessible work, and consequently many fans' and critics' favorite.

Top Beatles oldies - what more needs to be said? Includes a couple of their not-so-frequently heard songs. A very nice era of their careers. Great listening!
For some reason I don't like this album as much as the other Beatles albums. Drive my car is good but the rest of the tracks don't strike me. I'll probably grow to like it more and more as happens with a lot of music the more you listen to it but I'm just saying it's not as instantly likeable like the other albums.
Rubber Soul is probably my favourite Beatles album. It seems to strike just the right balance between their energetic 50s influenced early albums, and the experimental, boundary pushing efforts that followed. Songs like “Girl” and “Norwegian Wood” demonstrate that the Beatles were certainly capable of cynicism at this stage, but still wrapped their darker lyrics in jaunty melodies. “In My Life” also shows the beginnings of musical experimentation with it’s sped up piano riffs. Overall, this is a very accessible album and will always be near the top of my must -have lists.
the beatles where just embarrasingly gifted. no wonder mick jagger spent the next 40 years slagging them off. a group without equal. though u2 arent far behind. for creativity i think pink floyd is in their league. as is bob dylan and jimmy hendrix. but ultimately, these scousers stole the show
Why are all the Beatles album covers absolutely iconic? Were they simply surrounded by the best artists, producers, promoters and marketeers because they themselves were the greatest? Not sure, but it's a wonderful cover image. As for the music itself, 'Rubber Soul' could be seen as either the last of innocent Beatles sound or the beginning of the radical Beatles sound. Or both.

This is a very good album from the fab four. Highlights are 'Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)', 'Drive My Car', 'Nowhere Man' and 'I'm Looking Through You'. This album is a sign of things to come and shows a diversification away from their rock and roll sound of earlier albums.
A true listening delight!
