One of the rarer traditions to be found on the market, this album focuses on a pair of Croatian vocal groups from the Dalmatian region. The treat here for the listener is the discovery of klapa singing, a multi-part harmony based style. Descended from village and town traditions by way of the folk festivals over the last hundred or two years, the form is now a highly developed and pleasing sound. The choruses can belt out songs with surprising emotion for a sizable group of people. For those with an ethnic bent, you might note a fair deal of similarity with Ladysmith Black Mambazo's sound in the purely vocal sections, and that would be a correct account. A world away and in parallel development, the sound remains the same. ~ Adam Greenberg
