Performer Notes
  • Original score composed by Klaus Badelt.
  • An adventure movie in the grand old style, albeit a modern one featuring the quirky talents of Johnny Depp, the 2003 film PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN seems tailor-made for a good old-fashioned orchestral film score. Fortunately, that's just what composer Klaus Badelt gives it. You'll find no pop-group promotional tie-ins here, just plenty of evocative mood music that captures the drama and panoramic vistas of this summer blockbuster.

As the score to a summer blockbuster, it certainly has all the bombast and pounding rhythms one has come to expect of such soundtracks. It is surprising the soundtrack turned out as well as it did, given that the original composer, Alan Silvestri ("Back to the Future", "Van Helsing") was fired and the Media Ventures gang of "jolly roger" composers brought in at the last-minute to save the music.

Although Klaus Badelt's name appears on the front, a closer inspection of the detailed credits reveals no less than seven other composers, nine orchestrators, three conductors and one "overproducer" (whatever that means); in other words, a creative effort by committee, and only in five weeks, no less. This also resulted in huge swatches of music overlaid or even replaced entirely by synthesizers, chopping through overly-repetitive rhythms.

While synthesizers are increasingly becoming common, and indeed can enhance the musical effect (the chase through Coruscant in "Star Wars: Attack of the Clones", for example), on this score they're used as a corner-cutting measure, resulting in a bland, soulless confection which sounds exactly like any other summer blockbuster score - which is probably the worst thing about this music.

This movie could have been a tremendous opportunity for the composer(s) to write a truly memorable swashbuckling score, steeped in the Hollywood tradition spanning from "Captain Blood" and "Scaramouche" to "Cutthroat Island" and "Master and Commander". But apart from some cursory Celtic folk riffs and a little jig at the opening, you could take any part of this music and swap it with any other summer movie about alien invasions, giant robots or elite military units - and nobody would be the wiser. The music, simply put, fails to live up to the genre and character of the movie.

Haha, this movie is totally awesome. and the soundtrack is too. It's like listening to the movie but without the dialog so it has quite a cool feeling. It so makes you feel as though you are on the ship and like jonny depp is next to you. haha. No but seriously this soundtrack is awesome. Pirates of the Caribbean are awesome!!!

This evocative music sets the scene for the first of the Pirates movies.
Large rhythms, big beats and dramatic sound are the theme and really carry the actors through the drama.
Often amusing at times, the music really fits with the characters and the plot. Even without the movie this music is stimulating and enjoyable.

i normally dont really like the soundtracks or music themes to any of Jerry Bruckheimers epic movies, though dont always fit the build. But this track for the first pirates movie, The Curse of teh Black Pearl, is simply magnificent and epic in feel. The booming soundtrack keeps you listening and you will feel like your there watching the movie all over again, superb

A brilliant cd that is a necessity for anyone who loves Pirates of teh Caribbean. The music is very well written and it's a well produced cd. Relive the moments of teh moment in your mind as you listen to it's classic soundtrack. The songs are dramatic, emotion and lively. A great christmas present. Good to do the washing up to or studying strangely enough. It gave me a beat to work to. Very pulsing.

the movie was great and so is the music from it, much of it being created for the movie itself. if you are a massive fan of the film and the series then i recommend this album, its great accompinied with a nice book or magazine to read on a quiet, rainy afternoon. one for pirates of the caribean fans definatley!

How do you score a film that is an Action Adventure Period Piece with elements of Horror Paranormal Comedy and Sword Fighting? Well you have to ask Klaus Badelt that because he manages to do exactly that with this track. The thunderous BLack Pearl and Underwater Run tunes are really dark and juxtaposed with Bootstraps Bootstraps and lighthearted Walk the Plank make for the perfect combination

5 of 5 Stars! Customer review on 02/02/2006

This is an exciting soundtrack, with many great tracks, both pleasant and heart-stopping. It slowly builds up to the moment, throwing in an excellent piece of music with the score "Barbossa is Hungry". However, be prepared for some repeats; some listeners may be confused to find that a piece of music is repeated several times throughout the cd. Still, ending with the wonderful love theme "He's a Pirate" this cd is a good buy, and extremely fun to listen to.
