Theodore Roosevelt was born on October 27, 1858, and became the twenty-sixth president of the United States. He was a naturalist, writer, historian, and soldier. He died in 1919.
The Rough Riders is a firsthand account of the Spanish American War as witnessed by Theodore Roosevelt. Roosevelt, who was Assistant Secretary of the Navy when the war broke out, promptly resigned and became Lieutenant Colonel of the 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry. He collected cowboys, explorers, backwoodsmen, and miners to fight the Spanish on Cuban soil. Roosevelt tells of the group's adventures and defeats and of the excitement of being involved in a war across the sea. John Randolph Jones narrates this account in a quiet manner and employs a minimum of characterization. Nonetheless, action abounds, and the narrative is undiminished by Jones's reading style. Recommended for history, military, and biography collections.-Miriam Kahn, Columbus, Ohio
