Reviews

Daniel Liechty has made the psychological and theological thought of Ernest Becker accessible to a whole new generation of psychotherapists and pastoral counselors. Those who search for thet boundaries between psychotherapy and theological speculation will find Tranference and Transcendence to be an enormously helpful guide. Of special interest to pastoral couselors is Becker's notion that people do what they do in response fo their denial of death. Liechty's chapter entitled 'Intimations of Transcendence, ' provides pastoral counselors of all religious denominations departure points for discussions about symbolic immortality with clients struggling to find meaning in their lives against the backdrop of the ontological reality of death..--Rabbi Allan Cooperman Tuffs, D.Min., Temple Shalom of Bucks Co., PA

Liechty says that he has 'found in Becker's work a significant and essential contribution to psychological and pastoral counseling.' After reading Transference and Transcendence, I second that notion. The book is succinct, precise, and...crystal clear. Informed by psychology, theology, and the social sciences, it is highly recommended for psychotherapists and other practicing clinicans. Moreover, any intelligent person will find this presentation of Ernest Becker's ideas to be well work reading and re-reading. It is a book to be treasured.--Martin Goldberg, M.D., Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Director of the Division of Family Study, School of Medicine, University of PA
