nation of Brazil, Levine's book more than meets this
challenge....Levine's political anaylsis of the rocky road to
democracy is insightful, clear, and up-to-the-minute; his social

?For those readers previously unfamiliar with Brazil, this is an
excellent introduction. For those already well versed in the
literature, this is a good resource and teaching tool. Furthermore,
for any reader, the work raises pressing social questions about
global market economy and wealth distribution in the 21st
century.?-Luso-Brazilian Review
?This work provides a well-written account of Brazilian political,
social, and cultural history for the general reader. It would be a
good addition to any library developing a collection that includes
the Latin American countries, or the world's larger countries in
demographic, geographic, and economic terms.?-ARBA
