About the Author

Carroll Van West is senior editor of the Tennessee Historical Quarterly and an assistant professor at the Center for Historic Preservation, Middle Tennessee State University. His previous books are Capitalism on the Frontier: The Transformation of the Yellowstone Valley in the Nineteenth Century, Tennessee Agriculture: A Century Farms Perspective and A Traveler's Companion to Montana.
