Michael Frede was a professor of philosophy at Princeton University.
Frede, a leading historian of ancient philosophy, has here collected 17 papers, all of the highest quality. The papers are diverse; there is one on Plato, five on Aristotle, three on the Stoics, two on the Skeptics, four on ancient medicine, and two on ancient grammar. An introductory chapter, written for the collection, explains Frede's approach to ancient philosophy: to understand it, one ``has also to look at all the other histories''social, political, religious, civic``to which it is tied.'' Frede's work, impressive for its erudition and rigor but previously often accessible only to specialists, will now find the wider audience it deserves. Recommended for academic collections.
