Parenthood can be a time of great inner turmoil for a woman, yet parenting books invariably focus on nurturing children rather than the mothers who struggle to raise them. This book is different. It is a book for mothers. "Buddhism for Mothers" explores the potential to be with your children in the all-important present moment; to gain the most joy out of being with them. How can this be done calmly and with a minimum of anger, worry and negative thinking? How can mothers negotiate the changed conditions of their relationships with partners, family and even with friends? Using Buddhist practices, Sarah Napthali offers ways of coping with the day-to-day challenges of motherhood. Ways that also allow space for the deeper reflections about who we are and what makes us happy. By acknowledging the sorrows as well as the joys of mothering, the book can help you shift your perspective so that your mind actually helps you through your day rather than dragging you down. This is Buddhism at its most accessible, applied to the daily realities of ordinary parents.

my sister gave me this book when my first child was about one, it was the perfect gift, the author is like a friend that knows what life is like for you, the principles of buddhism connect deeply with those of a caring mother, the book addresses the hard stuff, anger and the so little personal time . Not just for practising buddhists, I am not, but for mothers who believe in and want to be patient, compassionate, wise . A nice companion
This is a fantastic book. Its something that you can read again and again to help maintain that calm, compassionate and patient mindset that every mother would like. My husband also read it and just substituted the word 'father' each time the book mentioned 'mother' and found it very relevant to him also. I have given it to many of my friends and family as gifts and am currently here on this site looking to purchase a few more copies to give away to some more first time mum friends. I would recommend it to anyone, mother, father or otherwise.
I loved this book....as a mother of three gorgeous children under 5, finding the time to read it was an issue!! When I did read the book, however, I found it just so relevant and easy to read. For anyone with an interest in the philosophies of Buddhism and a desire to lead a calmer, more healthy and fulfilling lifestyle, this is a fantastic read. It normalises all of those feelings you often have as a mother & gives gentle guidance to help you live in the present moment during those especially precious younger years. I am looking forward to purchasing the sequel to this; it has just been so helpful!!
This is a very accessible book for people who want to aply budhist principles and techniques into their lives to benefit themselves and their children. I especially liked that the author realises that mother's don't have time for very structured spiritual practice. She gives heaps of examples of moments and ways that we can all include some of this practice around caring for our kids. I would recommend this to anyone who is a stressed new mother!
I had borrowed this book from a friend and just had to buy it. It is not a book about how to be a mother, it is a book about how to know you are already a good mother, and how to tap into the beautiful tapestry that is life, and that is now, within every one of us. I love it, and cannot put it down.
Lovely concepts and easy to read for someone who is working off very few hours sleep. Enjoyed learning more about Buddhism but also found the practical advice very useful
I already own this book and bought a second to lend to family and friends because it's so great. I wouldn't want to go through motherhood without it, if I'm ever feeling down or stressed, I sit down read a few pages and instantly feel better. Highly recommended.
I highly recommend this book, whether interested in Buddhism or not, ti will resonate with many mothers and bring peace to them in such a profoundly simple way. It changed my whole mindset, and I think helped my children get a better calmer mother who has found an inner sense of peace - most of the time!!
