This book explains everything a reader needs to customise sewing patterns and achieve perfect fitting clothes. It reveals how to measure a body and draft a perfect-fitting skirt, T-shirt, button-down shirt, dress and trousers. It also features insider tips, explanations and how to endlessly alter patterns throughout. Many modern sewers are looking to draft their own patterns - but the only books that teach the skill are dry and outdated. "Design-It-Yourself Clothes" is a comprehensive guide to pattern drafting from concept to execution by Cal Patch, a fashion designer with a modern aesthetic. Cal offers 5 key projects, each with 4 variations. She covers how to measure your body and draft a perfect-fitting skirt, T-shirt, button-down shirt, dress and trousers. Insider tips, explanations and exercises are sprinkled throughout, plus readers are shown how to create patterns from the clothes already in their wardrobes - without ripping out a single seam!

This book has been getting good reviews so I was quite excited to have it in hand. It's essentially a pattern-making course in a book, with one pattern leading in to another, often subsequent patterns will borrow a sleeve from one pattern, a bodice from another, and you make alterations to come up with a third garment. This does mean you have to start with the simpler patterns like a basic tshirt or dress shirt, instead of leaping in to the deep end with some of the 'fancier' styles, but that's no bad thing really! I'd recommend having someone to help you take the measurements, some of them are quite complicated and you'd need to be a contortionist to take them yourself. The styles are simple and modern, and easily adaptable to whatever you want them to be - suggestions are made for using different fabrics for different effects which I think is great. The garment construction details are fairly basic, but the author clearly assumes that if you are at the stage of drafting your own patterns then you are familiar with basic construction techniques. I'm really looking forward to getting stuck in to these patterns!
