One of the most celebrated classics of the twentieth century, Orwell's cautionary tale of a man trapped under the gaze of an authoritarian state feels more relevant now than ever before. Winston Smith, a member of the outer Party, spends his days rewriting history to fit the narrative that his government wants citizens to believe. But as the gap between the propaganda he writes and the reality he lives proves too much for Winston to swallow, he begins to seek some form of escape. His desperate struggle to free himself from an all-encompassing, tyrannical state illuminates the tendencies apparent in every modern society, and makes vivid the universal predicament of the individual.

"Nineteen Eighty-Four is a remarkable book; as a virtuoso literary performance it has a sustained brilliance that has rarely been matched in other works of its genre...It is as timely as the label on a poison bottle." -New York Herald Tribune"A profound, terrifying, and wholly fascinating book...Orwell's theory of power is developed brilliantly." -The New Yorker"A book that goes through the reader like an east wind, cracking the skin...Such are the originality, the suspense, the speed of writing, and withering indignation that it is impossible to put the book down." -V. +1
another great read from legendary author orwell, who had many a brilliant idea in his head, least of all this classic story. this has a bit of a melancholy ending, and does not have what you would call an uplifting message. it does however, serve as a warning to the world, should another totalitarian society like stalins one exist again.

a great book. takes a while to really get into the swing of things, but because it is a classic you just know that you have to persevere and keep with it. it contains a warning to society about the dangers of totalitarianism, and the impact that it could have on the proletariat. lots of big words that you have to look up, which is great for your vocab!

this is a really great book for all those who are after something exciting to read! this tells of a society where the government controls every part of you, from what you eat down to what you wear, and the dangers of not conforming. winston, the protagonist, tries to fight against the govt, with some serious repercussions. excellent reading, i would really recomend this!

this is a really superb book to read, especially if you are after a really intellectual read! there are plenty of complex themes in here, such as the effects of totalitarianism on the masses, which is bound to occupy your mind, trying to dissect the "romance" or julia and winston. i found this book a bit hard to read, but enjoyable at the same time
