Sindiwe Magona was born in a village in the Eastern Cape and grew up in Gugulethu. She worked as a domestic worker and was a single mother of three by twenty-three. This did not prevent her from obtaining her matric. She went on to obtain degrees from UNISA and Columbia University in New York, where she worked for the UN for twenty-three years. She is currently completing her PhD in English Studies at the University of the Western Cape. Elinor Sisulu is an award-winning writer and activist. A close relationship with Albertina gave her an unparalleled understanding of the woman herself and the ability to depict her as true to life in this memoir. Elinor has worked as a journalist for many years and previously wrote the biography Walter and Albertina: In our lifetime.
