About the Author

Dick Durham served on the last working Thames barge before writing for national newspapers and sailing magazines. He joined Yachting Monthly in 1998 as Feature Writer and News Editor and has travelled the globe in search of the best sailing stories. Still a big part of the magazine, his role is now Editor at Large. Author of three sailing titles, he is well known for his powerful and poetic writing style.

"A cracking read." (Yachting World); "Gripping tales, both ancient and modern, of thrilling adventures at sea." (Bookseller Buyer's Guide); "Easy, page-turning fun." (Classic Boat); "Make sure you have a long watch when you pick this up as you won't be able to put it down." (Peter Goss, MBE); "Worse things happen at sea and when they do men are levelled: admirals become cannibals, mothers become master mariners, and DIY bodgers become circumnavigators as Dick Durham's book reveals." (Practical Boat Owner); "Here's a book you really can't go too far wrong with." (Sailing Today); 'With section headings like Survival, Calm, Storm, Human Error, Tragedy and Deliverance this is a book which promises an element of instruction within its overall remit to entertain. And it does not disappoint. From the first short chapter it's a bit of a rollicking read! Fleet Street trained, Dick tells his stories with a terse spartan style that ensures you never get bored or find your eyes wandering off the page.' (Classic Sailor, Jul 2016). "Some of the great sailing yarns retold in gripping style." (Classic Boat).
