First there is an empty field. Then it is January, the 1st month of the year. All alone in the snow strands 1 yellow house. In front, 1 child builds a snowman. Behind the house is 1 tree and 1 black crow. Now, five months later, it is June. There are 6 buildings in the field, 6 children playing, and 6 adults working. One adult tends 6 ducks. Another drives a train with 6 cars. From 1 to 12, through the months of the year, the town grows. More houses and trees and animals and people can be seen - until finally December arrives with all its wintery magic.

"One of the few truly intelligent counting books ever produced-and a work of art besides. -- "The New York Times"An excellent introduction to number systems and a beautiful wordless picture book as well. A counting book that's numero uno.-- "School Library Journal

Another clever picture book without words from Mitsumasa Anno. In this book, you and your child watch as a village is built, and are introduced to numbers and counting in a variety of ways - the seasons progress from January (1) to December (12) (though the seasons match the northern hemisphere, which may be confusing for children starting to understand calendar months. Also, the numbers of houses, trees, birds etc follow the number theme, as does the church clock tower.

My children enjoy spotting the children, and seeing what they are up to, or counting windows on the building, too.

We enjoy this book, and it is a different twist on a counting book.
