In ancient Rome the slaves are revolting ...and not only that, they've stolen Julius Caesar's own galley, the finest warship in the Roman navy. Under their heroic leader Spartakis, the former galley slaves make for the little Gaulish village where Julius Caesar's old enemies Asterix and Obelix live - only to find the place in crisis, for Obelix, after drinking the druid Getafix's magic potions on the sly, is first turned to stone and then reverts to childhood. In search of a cure for him Asterix, Getafix and their new friends the galley slaves sail to the wonderful continent of Atlantis, ruled by its high priest Absolutlifabulos - and the ensuing sea battles against the Roman navy are fast and furious ...

Reviews

The Asterix books represent the very summit of our achievement as a literary race. In Asterix one finds all of human life. The fact that the books were written originally in French is no matter. I have read them all in many languages and, like all great literature, they are best in English. Anthea Bell and Derek Hockridge, Asterix's translators since the very beginning, have made great books into eternal flames.--THE TIMES A cartoon drawn with such supreme artistry, and a text layered with such glorious wordplay, satire and historical and political allusion that no reader should ever feel like they've outgrown it.--TIME OUT

Youv gotta love asterix. Its about a guy caled asterix who is a bit small but helps his people (thee gauls) resist the roman occupation of his land with the help of a funny little wizard (with the white beard on the cover) and his fat friend obelix. There are heaps of asterix books out there and if you love comics, youl love asterix!

Another in a series of moneyspinners, written by an illustrator who has long been on his way out. This is a rambling, completely implausible story with some embarrassing attempts at cleverness. The dismembered plot and deteriorating illustrations fail even to capture the original personalities of the characters.

Uderzo was an outstanding artist, in his time, but shouldn't have attempted writing without his writer. Buy it if you're curious - better yet, borrow it from the library - but be prepared to be disappointed.
