To have Billy Connolly as a personal tour guide through some of the world's most dramatic landscapes in the vast wilderness of the Arctic is to enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime experience only he can offer. In his own quintessential way, this much-loved Scottish comedian, actor, musician and self-proclaimed 'citizen of the world' takes us zig-zagging from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean via Newfoundland, Canada, the Yukon and the Northwest Passage in an epic adventure only recently made possible through global warming. With his infectious enthusiasm and idiosyncratic humour, Billy goes searching for the beauty of ordinariness and bumps into all manner of weird and wonderful people along the way. He learns how to be a bear whisperer, pans for gold with prospectors, learns how to square dance, kayaks through ice floes between fishing trips, runs bare-assed into a sweat lodge, and attempts the finer complexities of the Inuit language. He jams with fiddlers, kisses a cod, goes hunting for Big Foot, and invokes the spirit of the ancients while iceberg-harvesting. With as many laugh-out-loud moments as they are poignant ones, Journey to the Edge of the World is more than just an informative and entertaining travel guide - it is time spent exclusively in the company of an irascible national treasure.

Dont expect this book to be like other trips that Billy has undertaken. This book ties in with the TV series of the same name which I can also highly recommend. Great layout it follows his journey across and around from the Atlantic coast to the Pacific via as above Newfoundland the Yukon and Arctic areas, visiting the Inuit peoples looking at the history of each area and its native peoples and the impact discovery and colonisation had on them and the land. I found the piece on the Northwest passage, doomed explorers and of the Inuit really interesting and at times sad.

The elderly Inuit gentleman who goes to the local museum so he can watch his forebears on early film taken by explorers in the 1920's and 1930's as a way of staying connected and close to his past and relations who have since died just so he can see them and see how they lived with their dog teams in hunting camps prior to european influence. The two ladies who throat sing for Billy, the local lady who cooks on local TV with Billys as guest for a day, and the mature(in her 80's) lady who lives many hours travel up river in the Yukon ranching by herself accompanied only by her trusty rifle (for bear), the gold panners, the ghost town and its inhabitants, a traditional sweat lodge, Billie gets to be a cowboy for a day and many other gems.

What to get a bloke for christmas who has everything I would suggest this either the book or DVD.
