British Diplomatic Instructions, 1689-1789, Vol. 1

Excerpt from British Diplomatic Instructions, 1689-1789, Vol. 1: Sweden, 1689-1727; Edited for the Royal Historical Society The texts of almost all these documents are taken from office copies. The originals, no doubt, stayed in the hands of the envoys and, unless drifted into the havens of the British Museum or other public libraries, lie buried in private archives or have been lost. In View of the clerks' eccentric punctuation, distressing to the reader, and their arbitrary use of capital letters, these have been modernised, and abbreviations have been extended. The ortho graphy, however, as of some historical interest, has been preserved. The dating of the documents is that of the originals; unless otherwise distinguished it will'be understood to be in the Old Style.
