Buffalo Jump

"What one gains in Charlotte Markman Stein's autobiography, Buffalo Jump, A Woman's Journey Through the 20th Century - knowledge, understanding, and inspiration. It is the intriguing, felicitously written account of the childhood and teen years of a young person and the pervasive influence of that formative period on the life, long and rich in experiences, which followed. Yet it is more. It is, simultaneously, the story of a Montanan, a girl, and a Jew in a gentile world. Stein recaptures, with exceptional skill and accuracy, the historical setting and ambience of Great Falls, Montana, a small urban oasis in the midst of a vast, remote, and lonely, if magnificent, country between the years 1922 and 1941. Equally vivid are the journals of passage to Los Angeles, an exciting yet strangely naive village in the 1940s, and visits to New York, less innocent perhaps, nevertheless a beacon of hope to the world, and then on to Jerusalem, whose very name is synonymous with promise." The Twentieth Century saw America's emergence from the hopelessness of the Great Depression to its rise to power during World War II. America became the melding of immigrants who created a great nation through their diversity, determination, and love of family. Ms. Stein powerfully describes how her father, Sam Markman, a Russian-born immigrant who escaped the pogroms and settles in the American West. We understand why he fell in love with the vast landscape of Montana. He marries a Jewish woman from St. Paul, M
