Twenty-five years ago, Bacall first published her best-selling memoir of her early and midlife trials and triumphs; this new edition brings readers up to date with the same style, sensitivity, wit, and passion. Bacall's rise to fame is well known: at 18, she left New York City for Hollywood and landed the lead in To Have and Have Not, costarring Humphrey Bogart. The couple soon became lovers despite Bogart's age and the studio's rejection of their union. Nonetheless, they were happily married for ten years until Bogart succumbed to cancer. Much of the book revolves around Bacall's life with "Bogie" and her friendships with Adlai Stevenson and Frank Sinatra. Bacall also covers more recent events: divorcing Jason Robards after eight years of marriage, suffering the loss of many friends as well as her beloved mother, and earning two Golden Globe Awards. Any fan of Bacall or Bogart will want to read this update; highly recommended for both public and academic libraries.-Rosalind Dayen, South Regional Lib., Broward Cty., FL Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
