Caesar the EDD (Explosive Detection Dog) is back in Dando-Collins' military fiction series, Caesar the War Dog. This time he has been assigned to a special ops mission to rescue the UN Secretary-General, who has been captured by the Taliban. Follow Caesar and his handler as they prepare for the mission, discuss tactics, and help execute the rescue. The characters are diverse but relatively flat, and the story is more cerebral than it is emotionally engaging. Instead, the book's strength is in its level of detail and contemporary subject matter. It is a positive voice for military intervention, which does not glorify war and violence but, rather, promotes peacekeeping and cooperation. Grades 4-7. --Julia Smith
Stephen Dando-Collins is the author of the acclaimed Captain Bligh's Other Mutiny and a successful series of popular histories about the legions of ancient Rome published in the US, UK, and Australia: Caesar's Legion, Nero's Killing Machine and Mark Antony's Heroes. Pasteur's Gambit was shortlisted for the science prize in the Victorian Premier's Literary Awards and won the Queensland Premier's Science Award. Crack Hardy, his most personal history, received wide acclaim. Mistaken Identity tells another episode of previously undiscovered Australian history.
"This action-packed adventure will satisfy animal lovers and military enthusiasts alike. Caesar is easy to love and admire, and he really shines at showing the greatness behind military service dogs." --School Library Journal
