Jewel Kats, 32, is an award-winning writer. She's also one tough cookie. At the age of nine, Jewel endured a car accident. Her physical abilities altered forever. She spent weeks in the Hospital for Sick Children recovering, has survived eight leg surgeries, and currently walks with a cane. (Note: It's fashionably handpainted!) Nothing stops Jewel. For six years, she penned a syndicated teen advice column for Scripps-Howard News Service and TorStar Syndication Services. Jewel has earned $20,000 in scholarships from Global Television Network and Harlequin Enterprises Ltd. She's penned three children's books, including: "Reena's Bollywood Dream" and "What Do You Use to Help Your Body?" This fairytale took her five years to write. It's just that special! Jewel is now working on a movie screenplay. She calls Toronto home. "An inspiring and exciting read for children of all ages and
abilities. Finally here is a book which shows that
wheelchair-mobile children can achieve anything. A clever, modern
twist on this traditional and much loved story."
--Joanne Smith, TV Producer, Terry Fox Hall of Fame inductee,
Gemini Award winner"This strength-based present day Cinderella
story reminds readers that everyone, including someone with a
physical challenge, can have the experiences and relationships they
hope to have. This Cinderella found that 'success was of her own
making'. A must have for every school library and therapy
office."
--Theresa Fraser, M.A., Child Psychotherapist and Play Therapist,
author of: Billy Had To Move"A wonderful, upbeat,
modernized version of a familiar fairy tale. Cinderella's physical
disability is taken in stride, and life goes on regardless. I loved
it!"
--Dr. Laurie Zelinger, Child Psychologist, author Please
Explain Anxiety to Me"A magnificent modern-day Cinderella
story teaching children of all ages--about creating one's own
success, happiness, and positive self-image while embracing life's
challenges."
--Sherry Jones Mayo, RN, EMTP, NCCN, author Confessions of a
Trauma Junkie"Why I liked this book - I really like that this
book re-tells the Cinderella story but with a modern twist and
Cinderella happens to be in a wheelchair. I like how this book
takes place in modern times and uses more modern language in the
text. It makes is fun to read. I think this book will be great for
all kids, not just disabled, to read about. I think it will make
being in a wheelchair seem not so different to kids who aren't. I
really like the happy ending. It made me smile. I think this book
should be in every house and classroom."
-- This Kid Reviews Books"At the age of nine, Jewel Kat
endured a car accident which altered her physical abilities
forever. After weeks in the hospital and eight leg surgeries, she
currently walks with a cane, which is fashionably handpainted, but
nothing stops her. Like Jewel, this Cinderella learns to work hard
at making her own 'they lived happily ever after' ending to the
story. Illustrator Richa Kinra's eye-catching painted work is
primarily in water colors, acrylics, and oils, but sometimes
incorporates colored pencil, dry colors, pen and ink, or collage.
This is a cute and heart-warming tale that will appeal to everyone,
especially children with disabilities who now have a Cinderella
with whom they can relate."
-- Wayne S. Walker, The Homeschool Book Review"There is
nothing like having a fresh take on a story that you feel as though
you know so well. That is exactly what Jewel Kats has done with her
book CINDERELLA'S MAGICAL WHEELCHAIR. We are presented with a
Cinderella that is not only dealing with special needs but
unappreciated for what she has to offer. When an opportunity arises
to meet a Prince, Cinderella is tricked into thinking that she will
be able to attend the costume party being held by the royal family,
but that is not to be. Magically, a special helper comes to help
Cinderella not only make it to the party but see something special
about herself as well. Jewel Kats has definitely given readers a
special Cinderella that is easy to relate to and teaches us the
importance of believing in ourselves. You can't ask for any more
than that."
