Excerpt from Curiosities of Mathematics for the Instruction of Mathematicians and the Benefit of the British Association for the Advancement of Science In the Liverpool Leader of August 21, 28, and September 11, 1869, there appeared three Articles from the pen of Mr. Whitworth under the title of Curiosities of Mathematics. In one of them, in which he introduced my name, he professes to prove that the arithmetical value of 7r is greater than 3125. These articles were to be continued, but after waiting several months without seeing any signs of it, I wrote a series of Letters in the Leader in which I exposed the fallacy in the premisses, reasoning, and conclusion of Mr. Whitworth. (thes e Letters appear in my last published work.) To these Letters he never replied, but in April, 1870, I received a curious epistle from him, in which he said - The series of Articles on Curiosities of Mathematics will probably be continued when you (i) have finished writing in the Leader under the same title. This led me to make another considerable pause. Still Mr. Whitworth remained silent, and I concluded my series with Letters which will be found in the following pages, and which must speak for themselves.
