About the Author

Lisa Shanahan (Author) Lisa Shanahan is an award-winning writer of picture books and fiction for young people. Some of her well-loved books include GORDON'S GOT A SNOOKIE, illustrated by Wayne Harris, and BEAR AND CHOOK and DADDY'S HAVING A HORSE, illustrated by Emma Quay. Her picture book BEAR AND CHOOK BY THE SEA, illustrated by Emma Quay, won the CBCA Book of the Year for Early Childhood in 2010 and BIG PET DAY, illustrated by Gus Gordon, won the Speech Pathology Book of the Year Award for the 5-8 age group in 2015. Lisa loves moon-gazing, making up words, mint slices, mock orange blossom, black cockatoos, shouts of unexpected laughter, the weight of a scruffy dog resting on her knee and cups of tea. She lives in Sydney, close to the river of her childhood, with her husband, their three sons and one bouncy spoodle. Emma Quay (Illustrator) Emma Quay (pronounced 'Kway') grew up in the English countryside, and has wanted to illustrate children's books for as long as she can remember. She works from a studio in her home, and sometimes feels like she barely leaves it... but her illustrative work is held in collections around the world, including the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Since moving to Australia in 1993, Emma has illustrated a wide range of award-winning children's picture books. Her memorable characters for Bear and Chook, Good Night, Me, Daddy's Having a Horse, Reggie and Lu, Rudie Nudie, Baby Bedtime and Not a Cloud in the Sky are favourites on many children's and library bookshelves. Emma lives in Sydney with her Australian husband and their two daughters. www.emmaquay.com

Reviews

Lisa Shanahan is an author who routinely produces picture books on familiar topics, however, her handling of subject manner is always far from routine. She has a flair for finding an unexpected or even quirky angle that gives her work a fresh, engaging character. On one level this title addresses the perennially popular theme of a family awaiting the arrival of a new baby. However its real focus is the endearing if somewhat exasperating tendency of young children to base their expectations upon their wishes and fantasies, rather than the facts presented to them. Lachlan is convinced that, while his mother is expecting a baby, his father is having a horse. He looks forward to this event as keenly as Caitlin does the arrival of a longed-for little sister. The narrative is driven by the potential for Lachlan’s ultimate disappointment but this is a book where even the reader may find that they do not get the result they anticipate. The author and illustrator previously worked together to produce the delightful Bear and Chook. Once again, Emma Quay’s work is distinctively endearing without being at all sentimental. Even the endpapers are a treat worth savouring. Lizzie Whyte has worked in public libraries, primary schools and educational publishing C. 2005 Thorpe-Bowker and contributors
