Reviews

Even if she were not a seminal figure in the establishment of Buddhist practice in the West, Ruth Denison's story makes compelling reading. As a young girl in Nazi Germany, she endured an eyeopening ordeal, and in the United States during the Sixties, she spent her time with her husband, the eclectic seeker Henry Denison, in the company of such legendary counter culture figures as Alan Watts and Timothy Leary. Having received transmission from the Burmese master U Ba Khin, Denison began her own style of teaching Buddhism, incorporating dance and sensitivity exercises learned from Charlotte Selver and others. Her strong following among women has made her a recognized pioneer teacher of Buddhism to Western women. Boucher (Opening the Lotus) is at her best when she allows Denison's distinctive voice to come through. At other times, her struggle with Denison's personality and methods is a distraction from her subject's fascinating complexity and wisdom. Still, while this book does not pretend to be a definitive biography, it is a valuable portrait of an important figure in the story of Buddhism's maturation in the West and is recommended for most public and academic collections.-Mark Woodhouse, Elmira Coll. [A] stirring yet unsentimental spiritual biography. --Bernadette McGrath, Dragonfly Review

"[Denison] brought a strongly feminine, body-centered approach to spiritual practice at a time when this was regarded as radical if not subversive . . . Boucher's life repeatedly intersects with Denison's, making this a dual tale of development and discovery and, therefore, doubly compelling." --Whitney Scott, Booklist

"Dancing in the Dharma skillfully conveys Ruth Denison's full humanity: her formidable gifts and charm and her puzzling contradictions . . . [A] riveting and deeply rewarding portrayal of a great teacher." --Shane Snowdon, Turning Wheel

"Author and Denison student Sandy Boucher gives an intimate portrait." --Shambhala Sun

"Ruth is one of our most amazing Buddhist elders, whose vision has helped plant the Dharma in the West. And this is her story, compellingly and beautifully told."--Jack Kornfield, cofounder of Spirit Rock Meditation Center and Insight Meditation Society, author of After the Ecstasy, the Laundry
