Dexter Morgan: forensic analyst, serial killer and ... family man?Miami's best-dressed serial killer is back and on the prowl, at least he would be if he could shake off his permanent shadow. Ever since their paths first crossed, Sergeant Doakes hasn't let Dexter Morgan out of his sight. Dexter may well be the Miami PD's blood-spatter analyst, but Sgt. Doakes has a pretty good idea of how Dex likes to spend his free time and he's determined to catch him in the act.Dex hasn't killed in months and is getting twitchy. To throw Doakes off his scent, he's spending more time with Rita, his girlfriend. But no matter how many cosy nights they spend in front of the TV, Doakes is still watching. Then a body turns up, horribly mutilated and barely alive. To trap the torturer, Doakes and Dexter will have to work together, if they can trust each other. It's a devil's pact and one of them will have to be the bait...

Furiously fast, funny and thrilling, DEARLY DEVOTED DEXTER proves what the critics said for his first Dexter novel: 'A virtuoso debut...a compulsive trip through territory rendered familiar by the psycho-thrillers of Thomas Harris and Michael Connelly' Guardian. Jeff Lindsay's debut, DARKLY DREAMING DEXTER, was one of the most original and exciting novels in the serial killer genre for years. It received excellent reviews: 'A sleek black comedy' Literary Review. 'It's easy to see why this debut novel has gone down a storm ... the whole thing is stylish, polished and very readable. Lindsay rattles off his story and does the job just as professionally as Dexter does his' Mirror. '[A] macabre tour-de-force' New York Times. 'Lindsay applies the thumbscrew with witty relish and draws the reader in from the outset ... Dexter is one of a kind and his adventures never fail to entertain' Guardian. The makers of Sex in the City, The Sopranos and Six Feet Under, have bought TV rights and will make a 26-part series featuring Dexter.

Reviews

Dexter the Demon, Dexter the Avenger-whatever he chooses to call himself, the hero of this intelligent, darkly humorous series knows he's a monster who loves slicing people into little pieces. That Dexter limits his killing to "acceptable" victims-usually other serial killers-is designed to keep the reader from having to worry too much about the morality of his avocation. Dexter's just added his 40th victim, a homicidal pedophile, and is eagerly looking ahead to number 41 when he becomes involved in a case through his job as a blood spatter analyst at the Miami-Dade police forensics lab. A man is found with "everything on [his] body cut off, absolutely everything"-a piece of work that makes Dexter's own tidy killings look like child's play. This madman, nicknamed Danco, spends weeks surgically removing his victims' ears, lips, nose, arms, legs, etc., while keeping them alive to watch their own mutilation. Despite a certain professional admiration for Danco's dexterity, Dexter decides to take on the case. It's the contradictions in Dexter's character that make it all work-he's smart, he's funny, he cares for children, and yet he has no normal human responses or emotions. The first book in the series, Darkly Dreaming Dexter, was very well received; this one should be as well, and deservedly so. (July 19) Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

After his first romp, a Book Sense pick and an LJ highlight ("a macabre gem"), he's out chasing another baddie while trying to keep Sergeant Doakes's suspicions at bay. If you thought 'Dearly Devoted Dexter' was good, this one is ten times better. I found the main plot to this fascinating and I often laughed and cringed throughout. I really enjoyed reading this book and after reading all four of the ones that have come out, this one is still my favourite. You definitely have to read this. Pick it up, buy it, read it and read it again. If you like Dexter and want more from him you will not be disappointed.

A very enjoyable book as are all the Dexter novels to date. Gore and humour meet in a fast-paced tale of serial killers, police and those who work for the police who are also serial killers. As the tale is told from Dexter's point-of-view with the reader knowing exactly what he is thinking, the story is that much more entertaining.

A fantastic follow up to Darkly Dreaming Dexter. Interesting how a book can be so gross in parts yet hilarious. You can help but be drawn in by Dexter's world & the way he views it. Jeff Lindsay writes a quick paced story with such a dark hero & at times I couldn't stop laughing. I am so looking forward to the next specially after some major developments of the characters.

Enjoyed the book thouroughly. The TV series mirrors the book initially, but then goes on it's own merry way - taking different aspects of the book to make up serveral different episodes.

All in all a great read.

Nothing like the tv series of dexter you may find this book a little gruesome if not downright macabre.
