The Auckland Cancer Society was formed in 1929 as a division of the New Zealand branch of the British Empire Cancer Campaign Society. For over 75 years the society has provided a full range of support services to people with cancer and their families, in Auckland and Northland. It also has a unique relationship with an internationally recognised cancer research centre - the Auckland Cancer Society Research Centre - the only Research Centre which has developed and brought an anti-cancer drug (Amsacrine) into clinical use in the Southern hemisphere. As approximately 80% of cancers are due to lifestyle and environmental factors, the Auckland Cancer Society is taking a lead in cancer prevention through their programmes SunSmart, Smokefree and LiveSmart.
