Tom Wolfe's -- yes, I was there! -- style of reportage is perhaps not as shocking as it was at first reading in the 70s. Mid-way the story seems to lose focus, much like the infamous movie that the Merry Pranksters shot on their road trip across America in their bus 'Furthur'. Yet the book is an indispensable read, partly because of the hugely influential role Ken Kesey plays in spanning and connecting San Francisco's Beats and Hippies; partly because it reminds us how the crazy, acid-fuelled experimentation of the early 1960s became a commercial free-for-all that eventually undermined the principles that spawned it; and partly because -- 50 years on -- everyone should try to remember (or understand) what the world looked and felt like in that Summer of '67, when everything was possible and love was in the air.
