When South African conservationist Lawrence Anthony was asked to accept a herd of 'rogue' elephants on his reserve at Thula Thula, his commonsense told him to refuse. But he was the herd's last chance of survival - notorious escape artists, they would all be killed if Lawrence wouldn't take them. He agreed, but before arrangements for the move could be completed the animals broke out again and the matriarch and her baby were shot. The remaining elephants were traumatised and very angry. As soon as they arrived at Thula Thula they started planning their escape...As Lawrence battled to create a bond with the elephants and save them from execution, he came to realise that they had a lot to teach him about love, loyalty and freedom. Set against the background of life on the reserve, with unforgettable characters and exotic wildlife, this is a delightful book that will appeal to animal lovers everywhere.
A charming, moving account of one man's race to save a herd of elephants.
Lawrence Anthony is a highly-respected conservationist and co-founder of The Earth Organization. His previous title, Babylon's Ark, about his involvement in saving the animals in Baghdad Zoo, is being made into a major film. Graham Spence is a freelance journalist and author.
I am really pleased that I bought this book and enjoyed reading every page. Not only did the author share his amazing incites into this wonderful animal, but also an empathy with animals that is rare. His ability to understand the lessons imparted by his adopted herd and use them for the benefit of all animals in his care was heart-warming. I would recommend it to everyone who cares about wildlife. It is very hard to put down.
Thoroughly enjoyed this book. For any animals lovers or those interested in
learning more about how these animals communicate and live their lives this book is worth reading. If money were no object would love to visit this wild life sanctuary.
This book had me absolutely hooked and I couldn't put it down. EVERYONE should read this book and understand just what humans are doing to destroy animals and the full cycle of nature. Anyone dealing in ivory needs to be hung drawn and quartered. I am hoping to visit Thula Thula in 2017
Grab this book and enjoy
This book is a 'must read'. I was fascinated by the insights by Mr Anthony of intelligence of these wonderful creatures, and to ponder how little we really know about the creatures we share the planet with. We humans think we know all there is to know, and yet this book highlights how we have only just had a peek into the world of these animals. I have much more respect for elephants and shudder now when I see pictures of tourists riding them.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book as it was written honestly and from the heart. It conveyed how various elephants were put together including a mother, daughter and aunt and other "dysfunctional" elephants to form a herd after the matriarch and her baby were killed as they were considered rogue. These beautiful creatures were then transported to a game reserve on Zululand otherwise they would have all been killed. Lawrence Anthony gives an excellent account of how he eventually befriends these elephants and how they develop a beautiful trust between them. He does not gloss over events but portrays the difficulties he has with poachers and his own staff. Each elephant has its own personality and the author shows this beautifully. It was very sad in parts. Thank goodness there are people in Africa who go to the extent Lawrence Anthony went to in preserving these beautiful, intelligent creatures. I learnt quite a lot including that Zululand did not have any elephants left before Lawrence Anthony took this herd. Well worth a read.
I saw this book advertised on the website called fishpond and decided to purchase it. What a wonderful read. At time sad but always insightful. I just love this book.
Strangely not 2 weeks after reading this book there was a show on TV that featured this wonderful couple's wonderful game reserve. I think it's a sign that I should visit this amazing place in Africa.
I certainly recommend this book to any animal lover - I know you will love it as much as I did.
One day I hope meet this amazing couple and their wonderful animals.
A lovely heart warming book.So good to know there are people like these doing all they can to help our wild animals survive and live safely in their natural environment, and encouraging others to do the same. A very honestly written account of successes and failures and lessons learnt.
