This is the type of book where you can't skip pages when reading to your child - there is no way you can miss any of the characters out! A fantasic imaginative romp where the bad baby is not really bad - just misguided! The pictures are stunning, and your brain will get a workout just reading all the characters names again and again. Great fun.

My two year old granddaughter loved the repetiveness of the story - the rumpety rumpety rumpety downt the road. But I'm not too sure of the connotations of 'the bad baby'!

My toddler has loved this since he was weeny. The illustrations are gorgeous and really you shouldn't think too hard about the moral message. A bit tiring to read over and over but I find it cute and funny. And if an elephant came into my shop with a baby on his back, I'd let them take practically anything they liked, whether they said please or not!

Extremely repetitive and to be honest i don't really think the supposed moral teaching (remember to say please) is really commununicated that well as the bad baby still seems to get everything he asks for. Also the bad baby is a red head - i can't help feeling if he'd been a good baby he'd be a blonde. Stereo typing from such an early age! Some of the references are a bit dated and anglicised, we don't really get barrow boys and grocers in Oz. Having said all that my 3 year old adores this book so i feel compelled to give it a good rating.

One of my favourite children's story books with such a good moral - remember your manners! Everyone will enjoy reading about the Bad Baby's adventure as he rides on The Elephant, "rumpeta, rumpeta, rumpeta" down the streets and through the town before finally being taken home and to bed. The pictures really add to the enjoyment too.

This book really is a classic. An elephant takes a baby for a ride through the town. The baby demands things from each shop they pass by. The elephant gives him everything he asks for, but he never says "Thank you". At each shop the shop keeper joins the previous shopkeeper in chasing the elephant and the baby through the town. When the elephant realizes that the baby has bad manners he stops and all the shop keepers catch up. In the end they all have tea together. My kids love this book and on each page they say "Hey don't forget - Please" or "He forgot to say - Thank you again!".

I really don't get this book. I disagree entirely with the previous reviews interpretation that the elephants "gives the baby everything he asks for" The baby doesn't ask for anything. The baby's apparent crime is never saying please. I guess while we are moralising on manners we are expected to ingnore the fact that the elephant takes the baby on a stealing spree! The elephants theft never comes into question only the 'Bad Baby's' omitting a please as the elephant offers him more and more stolen goods. I think this is a dreadful book on many levels.
