The ghosts of the Civil War still haunt the halls of nineteenth century American history. The crack of the whip, the clanging of the chains, the psychological and physical abuse, and all the other horrid hallmarks of slavery will forever be remembered as emblematic of the era's awful darkness. The young American nation of the 1800s groaned and strained mightily under the weight of a terrible hypocrisy, an inhumane system, and the unjust domination and persecution of the innocent.
