What are the senses? secret messengers; sight; dark and bright; smell; scent and savour; taste; sweet and sour; touch; hot and cold; hearing; loud and soft; a world without senses
Gr 2-4-A brief introduction to the five senses, supplemented with activities to explore them. Four pages are devoted to each sense; the typical double-page spread has four or five large, colorful photographs or drawings, each one captioned with two or three sentences. Because of the brevity of the text, the information is fairly superficial. The photographs are good, but the drawings are somewhat crude and oversimplified. The activities suggested are interesting, but are not really experiments, although some of them could probably be expanded upon. Overall, this could be an enjoyable book for browsing, but does not provide much depth. Neil Ardley's The Science Book of the Senses (Harcourt, 1992) is better for greater exploration of the topic.-Janet K. Hamilton, Museum of Science, Boston
