If you're doing something you love, you'll never notice the hours it takes to do it very well, and it's worth it, says Flip Nicklin, a National Geographic photographer with more than 5,500 dives spent observing dolphins and whales, to his credit. His 20 articles for the National Geographic magazine include: Humpback Whales (1982), Whales Called Killer (1984), Rare Look at Sperm and Blue Whales (1984), Narwhal Unicorn of the Arctic (1986), Whales, An Era of Discovery (1988), Dolphins in Crisis (1992), Beluga, White Whale of the North (1994), Bowhead Whales (1995), Realm of the Elusive Sperm Whale (1995), Marine Sanctuaries (1998), Bottlenose Whales (1998), Listening to Humpbacks (1999), and Pursuing the Minke (2001). His books include With the Whales and Whales, Dolphins, and Porpoises, published by the National Geographic Society. He works actively with the Whale Trust, a whale conservation organization. His co-author is his wife, Linda Nicklin, a writer, researcher, and whale lover. Together they work on research and education projects in Alaska and Hawai'i from their new research boat, The Trust.
