Reviews

This oral history of a band that was more famous in death than in life richly details the Pixies' rise from Boston-club-scene unknowns to influential cult darlings. However, its delivery is shaky. The band members, as well as their circle of business partners and friends (including alt-rock luminaries like J. Mascis and Kristin Hersch), offer up facts and anecdotes that are divided into chapters focusing on key albums, notable tours (in Europe and with U2), and the band's growth, death, and recent rebirth. Suspicions are confirmed-e.g., producer Steve Albini does not hate the Pixies-and interesting facts come to light-e.g., the lyrics to "Monkey Gone to Heaven" were inspired by Hebrew numerology. But the Pixies' story would have been better served by a prose project that set off the intriguing anecdotes with contextual narration. Valuable for its extended view of the 1980s Boston rock scene, this book is essential for Beantown libraries. Beyond that, it is recommended for large music collections only.-Robert Morast, Argus Leader, Sioux Falls, SD Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

"Anecdote-filled and definitive, Fool the World is an eyewitness account of the Pixies' tumultuous career and their subsequent reinvention of underground rock." * Q Magazine *
