About the Author

S.J.Volk is one of America's forgotten great cartoonists of the 20th century. His distinctive cartoons have appeared in major magazines and newspapers, as well as being featured at popular hotels and nightclubs. Born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1932, S.J.Volk demonstrated his skill as a caricaturist during childhood. His memories of a previous life as a portrait artist explained his uncanny talent so early in this life. His humorous drawings and writing provided a welcome relief from the depression era and his own painfully shy nature. Fast forward to Florida: Mr.Volk landed in Miami Beach on a sizzling hot July 20, 1969 at precisely the same time as America's cool lunar module Eagle landed on the moon. Obviously a positive omen. By day he worked as cartoon editor on the Miami Star, a local newspaper edited and published by the legendary Art Rhodes and Margie Sherrill, who both saw in the artist a unique talent. At night, he would be seen sketching his astonishing quick colorful portraits at Miami Beach's popular Hotel Fontainebleau, The Playboy Club, and the notorious Club Madonna. Nightclub owner Leroy Griffith welcomed Mr. Volk's sketches of the dancers and offered to advertise his artwork in the theater lobby. His vivid caricatures are reminiscent of the drawings by 19th century French artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec at the famous Moulin Rouge in Paris. S.J.Volk's cartoons have appeared in publications as diverse as the Writer's Digest and NEA Journal, to the Navy Times and the Queens Tribune. With crisp laser-like precision, each of his cartoons is a richly crafted masterwork of imagery and concept. His drawings are signed simply with his middle name "Josh." In a few swift bold lines, his charming cartoon characters spring to life with timeless human foibles and subtle facial expressions. S.J.Volk's precisely-worded captions and dialog balloons consistently ignite his drawings with explosive wit and uproarious satirical humor.
