No. 112, June 06

A hardback, written by a journalist and probably aimed at the adult beginner because there is a great deal of writing. Five scarf patterns out of the 22 in the book, clear but sparse and relatively small diagrams and after 136 pages still not onto Fair Isle. Amusing and informative but what a lot of writing (in N. American spelling)!

Getting Started Knitting is more basic than many books for beginners, making no assumptions and aiming to avoid information overload for newbie knitters.

Before you even cast on a stitch, there's plenty of advice on offer, from choosing the right yarn and needles to casting on and getting to grips with knit and purl stitches. Projects start with the simplest scarves and move on to include cute hats, a funky bag, simple jumpers and cardigans.

The book covers all the basics, while still providing plenty of encouragement to keep your needles clacking. With its clear layout and contemporary projects, Getting Started Knitting would be the perfect present for a new knitter. It's peppered with helpful hints and tips, including the fact that, according to legend, surprising your boyfriend with a knitted gift will doom the relationship. Don't say we didn't warn you!

This energetic primer will appeal to newbies from their tweens through their twenties. A cute quiz starts each chapter, testing the reader's knitting knowledge and funny bone...Yes, the usual technical suspects of beginner books are all here, illustrated for clarity, but Worick goes better, walking the reader through a yarn shop and devoting an entire chapter to recovering from knitting accidents. Drop-stitch and geometric shawls, baby blankets, a lacy skirt/capelet: each offers a building-block challenge encased in an attractive package.
