About the Author

Barbara Cain learned garment sewing from her mother before her interests quickly turned to quilts. She studied interior design and honed her design skills while working as a partner of an architectural firm. She lives in Wexford, Pennsylvania.

Big and bold are apt descriptors for the quilts in this collection, which showcase large geometric shapes in bold, contrasting colors. The large size of the shapes makes for quick cutting and piecing, and there are plenty of tips for precise piecing throughout the book. Ten patterns are included, with fabric requirements for both lap and twin-size quilts, but the nature of the design makes it simple for quilters to calculate fabric requirements and layouts for larger-size versions. In addition to the color palette in the samples, each pattern includes suggested color palettes, which makes the process of choosing the right fabrics much easier. A cutting diagram for a number of sizes of each quilt facilitates efficient cutting. Cain's quilts feature pieced backs, making them reversible. The backs include the shapes from the quilt top, as well as plenty of negative space or a coordinating modern print. The articulate directions feature plenty of illustrations, especially for trickier piecing and are complemented by a full diagram for assembling each quilt top. VERDICT Cain's approach to modern quilting will appeal to quilters who are drawn to bold colors and minimalist styles, but who prefer a style that is less improvisational and more precise. Library Journal, 11/15/15 This is my kind of quilting, big pieces that fit together in bold designs. Quilts to make in a weekend not once in a lifetime. Subtitled 'Large-Scale Modern Quilts', there are ten projects that are cut and made up in no time at all. Even beginners can achieve great results with these contemporary designs. Each quilt pattern comes with two sizes and six colourways offering a versatile 120 options. The quilt backs really form part of the design too, taking elements from the front.Simple yet effective design is always a winner. There's a basics section at the back of the book. This book has wide appeal and as always with Stash books, it has great layout, is easy to use and the photos are superb. Recommended., 12/3/2015 Yes, you really can make a quilt in a weekend! Well-known blogger and author Barbara Cain shows you how to indulge your favorite hobby when you make simple patchwork scaled to dynamic proportions, so the pieces are quicker to cut and faster to sew. Perfect for beginning as well as advanced quilters, each of the 10 big-block designs includes two sizes and six colorways to create myriad striking possibilities. Modern Quilts Unlimited, Winter 2016 "Go big or go home" can apply to the tactile sport of quilting, too! Our preferences for block size may vary from project to project or month to month, but we're always looking for great patterns with burly blocks. You know, hefty, straightforward blocks that come together quickly and have cuts large enough to showcase that hoarded [insert favorite designer name here] fabric. Go Big, Go Bold heaps up 10 robust quilts with lap and twin size options. Each quilt has a pieced back pattern too, giving us two quilts for the price of one. Generation Q, Spring 2016 These ten quilts have bold graphic designs. They are all reversible because the pieced backs echo the quilt tops. Six quilts have squares and rectangles, four have large triangles. The triangles have to be cut using templates. Each quilt has instructions for a lap quilt and a single bed quilt. There are charts for cutting and diagrams for assembling the quilt tops. The instructions for joining the triangles with bias edges are excellent. There are alternative colour plans and suggestions for quilting designs. The finishing directions are easy to follow and there is a good glossary. An interesting collection of modern designs.
