Mel Amon lives on Garigal land with her husband, her long-board,
and a 3-meter avocado tree she planted by accident when composting
her vegetables. Mel now spends her days helping people of all ages
with their big feelings, and drinking a lot (but really, just the
right amount) of tea.
Sophie Beer is an illustrator from Brisbane, Queensland. She
completed dual bachelors in Law and Creative Industries at
Queensland University of Technology before turning freelance.
Revelling in colour, shape, and texture, she lives by one simple
rule: art should never be boring. When she's not illustrating,
she's usually found drinking dangerous amounts of tea and indulging
in her other passion: literature.
"[F]unny and memorable ... [A]n absurd and clever narrative ... It
could really be used as a prompt starter for a game on words and
what they mean, especially for little kids who are building up
their vocabulary or are learning to read."
--Mariana Ruiz, GeekDad "Hare or hair, pear or pair, son or sun --
abounds in a glorious new picture book from author Mel Amon,
illustrated by national treasure Sophie Beer. Good Morning, My
Deer! is a celebration of homophones: two words that sound the same
but mean very different things ... For kids aged 3+ who love a bit
of nonsense, those just starting to learn to read, and those with
an appreciation for the absurdities of the English language, this
debut picture book offers plenty to look at and discuss. Amon's
straightforward text turns an ordinary day into something quite
extraordinary, and Beer's bright and instantly recognizable
illustrations are the perfect companion. Older children and
grown-ups alike will enjoy hunting for easter eggs in the pages
(not all the homophones are in the text), and there's a deep sense
of satisfaction when you correctly identify pie/pi, beats/beets, or
jeans/genes."
--Books+Publishing "This is a book I wish I'd had when I was
teaching -- it's fun, engaging, and brilliantly visual."
--@books_for_little_bookworms "I'm currently teaching homophones to
my class and this is the PERFECT text to engage them in this
subject! KS1 teachers--you need this!"
--@storiesforlittleones "One for the older, whimsical readers, this
funny look at homophones will have readers chuckling away. Teachers
would make great use of this story when introducing the concepts of
homophones."
-- Erin Lyn Hamilton, My Shelves are Full ""I was a fourth grade
writing teacher and my students would have adored this book....[It]
follows a regular day in the life of a young deer with his mama.
The twist? The story is filled with homophones making this day such
a funny adventure. The illustrations are fantastic and the book is
such a good time, your kiddos will be amazed at how silly English
can be!"
-- @bookgrowminds Praise for illustrator Sophie Beer's Change
Starts with Us: "Illuminated by a bright, bold color scheme,
carefully crafted scenes reveal sensible good habits, like
conserving water and reducing waste, that can help save the planet.
Beer, creator of Love Makes a Family, depicts diverse illustrated
young characters ... All children will see themselves in these
pages, and feel a bit more empowered to make better choices."
--School Library Journal Praise for illustrator Sophie Beer's
