About the Author

Erin Johnson grew up watching classic western movies with her father, which fueled her lifelong love of horseback riding. She's always dreamed of being a fierce-talking cowgirl, but writing about one seemed like the next best thing. She loves traveling, painting, riding motorcycles, and teaching, and lives in North Carolina.

Reviews

...a well-written western that really depicts the early west without softening any of bad parts. I felt Grace's pain, her Indian friend's attachment to her, and her willingness to sacrifice all to avenge her family. I'm ready to travel with Grace on her new journey. - Jo Anne Hakola, Journey of a Bookseller

Wow! Kept me enthralled the whole way through. I galloped through it. Grace is a strong, brave heroine...poignant and heartwrenching...I can't wait to see what adventures she'll face next. I'm cheering her on. - Dyan Lyons, Goodreads

...a classic Western tale complete with lawless gangs, crooked lawmen, frontier towns full of drunks and brothels, wandering Indians, itinerant preachers and the pioneers trying to carve out a life in the middle of the chaos. Reading this felt like reading Lonesome Dove", except with a YA twist. Johnson starts the action immediately with a brutal killing and never lets up. The narrative is fast moving, the setting is evocative and the characters are well written and developed. girls will especially like the tough, driven female main character, Grace, who is the Western version of Katniss Everdeen." - Mari Anne, Goodreads

You don't get to be inside a guy's head like you do in Facebook Ferrets very often...With wit, honesty and twisted charm, we're opened up to the world of much more than Ferrets...I felt like I could only read it in short bursts or my sides would split open...Funny & serious. I can't even do it justice. It's always nice to be funny but it was so much richer. I can't think of any book which is like this. No book has similar characters, so many different plot lines...and is so quick to change from comedy to an issue far from funny (even though Josh can be light about it so it doesn't really weigh you down). It's legendary. - Amy, Amy Bookworm

An ordinary night on the Milton Ranch ends in tragedy when 17-year-old Grace witnesses the coldblooded murder of her family by the Guiltless Gang. With the town sheriff on the gang’s payroll, it’s up to Grace to bring them to justice, but her desire for vengeance far outweighs her abilities. Starving and badly injured, Grace is rescued by Joe, an orphaned settler who was raised by a tribe of Apaches after his own family was murdered. As Grace slowly regains her strength, Joe teaches her the hunting and survival skills she needs to track down the Guiltless Gang, but will she be able to leave him when the time comes? Johnson adheres to the well-established conventions of the western genre but provides a modern twist through Grace’s contemporary demeanor. Secondary characters are alternately stereotypical or highly romanticized, resulting in a world that is not quite fully realized, but the cinematic quality and rapid pacing should keep readers engaged. The cliff-hanger ending and a plethora of unanswered questions guarantee an exciting sequel. — Summer Hayes

...love the fact that Grace isn't perfect. As with any heroine, she has to learn and I'm glad that she doesn't know everything from the start. - Erika Nguyen Thorsen, Red Bookmark

...a classic western tale. You can almost taste the dusty air, feel the gritty grip of the desert that protrudes from it’s... chapters. The imagery presented is truly enthralling [...] The atmosphere of the novel is introduced right from the beginning with a gripping scene of action that sets the tone for the rest of this Wild West story. - Jack, The Book Stop
