Introduction and Notes by Gene M. Moore, Universiteit van Amsterdam. Generally regarded as the pre-eminent work of Conrad's shorter fiction, Heart of Darkness is a chilling tale of horror which, as the author intended, is capable of many interpretations. Set in the Congo during the period of rapid colonial expansion in the 19th century, the story deals with the highly disturbing effects of economic, social and political exploitation of European and African societies and the cataclysmic behaviour this induced in some individuals. The other two stories in this book - Youth and The End of the Tether - concern the sea and those who sail upon it, a genre in which Conrad reigns supreme.

About the Author

Introduction and Notes by Gene M. Moore, Universiteit van Amsterdam

Hesperus's centenary edition of the Conrad classic also includes The Congo Diary and Up-River Book, which essentially are notes from his six-month stay in the Congo in 1890. His travels there and sojourn on the river apparently served as the inspiration for the novel. The book also features introductions for Heart and The Congo Diary as well as textual notes for all sections. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.

Wow, what an amazing book. The story of a river boat captain who has to journey deep in the primeval African Jungle traveling up the Congo.
It was the inspiration for the Francis Ford Coppola film “Apocalypse Now”.
It very accurately sums up the European attitude towards the African people as well as being a chilling journey in to one mans insanity..

I found this book to be very compelling and powerful.
It really captures the racial attitudes of the day. The last reviewer said that the found it difficult to work out who was talking to who etc, I did not have this problem at all.
I think its one of those classics that everyone should read. If you have seen the film Apocolypse Now you will enjoy it.

I hated this book. The imagery isn’t all that spectacular and it is often hard to figure out who is talking to whom and where as the story is told by a man on a boat, telling a story about traveling into the Congo on another boat. So it does become quite confusing. My teacher really appreciated this book, so perhaps that indicates who the book is directed at.
