John J. "Jamie" Barnes has lived in a California desert 55+ community almost six years. A graduate of Harvard College (A.B., Economics), he's done business start-ups for AT&T International all over the world. After retirement, he consulted in Eastern Europe for six years, ran a foundation there and then began doctoral work in Modern Languages and Critical Theory at Wayne State and Cornell Universities. After passing 20 hours of oral and written doctoral exams, he moved to San Marino, California without writing a thesis. He speaks French and German badly but reads both languages reasonably well, has served on the volunteer board of the Detroit Institute of Arts and Pasadena's Frostig School Board of Directors, is an avid tennis and pickle ball player and now enjoys retirement, which as of January 2015 is entering its 22nd year.
