A uniquely powerful novel of a society in decay. On a planet whose very nature is a mystery a massive decrepit city is pulled along a massive railway track, laying the line down before it as it progresses into the wilderness. The society within toils under an oppressive regime, its structures always on the point of collapse, the lives of its individuals lived in misery. No one knows where they are going, why they are going or what they will find when they get there. The ending of the novel provides one of the most profound twists in SF.

The book had great potential, but elements in the plot and writing style kept it back. Sexism within the text stuck out like a soar thumb. I'm not referring to women's position within the plot, but the way they are described by the author. However, this was only a small part of what kept the book from being great. The plot left me confused at some points when describing the world they live in. Overall, it was an enjoyable read but I was able to put it down for periods of weeks before returning to it, which is rare for me.

Classic sci from Christopher Priest, in which a highly civilised people are making their way slowly across an alien terrain by way of a huge train that houses the city of Earth... inside it is peaceful and efficient, but outside in the harsh environment various guilds --- future, traction, militia, barter, navigator --- keep hauling up the tracks in behind and laying them in front, ever pursuing the optimum, and fleeing dark forces behind...

out standing stuff; hardcore sci fi for fans...
