Reviews

"The definitive guide for Italian food culture." -- Rick Steves Takes dead aim at the brain's pleasure centers, conjuring up a seductive vision of simple but succulent meals dished out to hardy fisherfolk surrounded by gorgeous scenery." The New York Times An outstanding book, remarkable for its breadth of coverage, full of insights and compulsive reading. Plotkin eats where locals eat, shops where they shop, celebrates local folklore and festivals, visits museums, vineyards, craft bakers and otherartisan food producers and generally relishes life 'con brio'." -- Philippa Davenport Financial Times Mr. Plotkin will not simply lead you to the busiest market, the frothiest cappuccino and the most fragrant bakery, but also to hidden trattorias and grocery shops. This is the work of a discerning greedy writer. There is even a bonus of 42 recipes."N -- Nigel Slater The Observer The perfect food lover's guide to Italy." -- Carole Field Most visitors to Italy flock to the crowded tourist centers, but in Italy for the Gourmet Traveler Fred Plotkin takes us beyond the traditional tourist experience and lures us to special places, whether in big cities or out-of-the-way villages, often overlooked by the uninitiated. Under his discerning eye, we learn about the food, wines, local bakeries, olive oil distilleries, ice cream parlors, cheeses, markets, restaurants and best kept secrets of Italy's culinary world. Lovingly drawn portraits of the people who make her world-famous regional specialties, and a smattering of local history make each village, town and city come alive. Maps encourage the intrepid traveler to head off the beaten track, while evocative black and white photographs add to the immense charm of this vastly readable guide. TasteTrekkers Fred Plotkin, author of what is, arguably, the foodies "bible" to Italy, a three-inch thick book called Italy for the Gourmet Traveler. Its 5th edition is debuting in bookstores this month. -- Pauline Frommer Frommer's, 4/16/2014
