Reviews

K-Gr 1-Each purposeful book contains two stories about characters who must resolve typical childhood situations. In Go Away, Ben wants to sit in Grandma's lap but it is already occupied by two other children. One of them comes up with a solution, and the text asks, "How do you think Ben feels now?" Next, both Nadia and Maggie want to play storekeeper in their imaginary shop. In It's Mine, Amy and Emma must solve a problem when there is only one piece of gold paper left, and Amal and Colin fight over a tiger mask. In Move Over, a tent becomes too crowded when everyone wants to get in, and Jamie and Nathan fight over space on a tabletop. All three titles are written in short, choppy sentences. Throughout the books, questions in bold type serve as discussion points for adults and children to explore their reactions to the situations presented. The watercolor illustrations clearly show the expressions on the characters' faces, but do little else. Quality literature that touches on these issues is readily available. Leo Lionni's It's Mine (Random, 1996), Martha G. Alexander's Move Over, Twerp! (Dial, 1981; o.p.), Nancy Carlson's How to Lose All Your Friends (Viking, 1997), and Laurene Krasny Brown's How to Be a Friend: A Guide to Making Friends and Keeping Them (Little, Brown, 1998) are just a few of the titles that children will enjoy and learn from at the same time.-Sandra Welzenbach, Villarreal Elementary School, San Antonio, TX Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
