Caesar Wong on
A great effort for a first novel, Strange & Norrell pokes into that area of fictional history, as it attempts to recount the tale of the Napoleanic wars alongside the fictional story of the revival of English magic. The plot pacing is patchy, with some parts being a terribly slow slog, but it definitely picks up greatly towards the end. Clarke delivers an interesting and compelling premise, but could have benefited from tighter editing.

This has got to be one my most favorite books ever! It has authentic feel of the 1900’s, and if you are familiar with history will recognize many of the famous names throughout the book. I have never been all that interested in history, but after reading this, looked up quite a few the people mentioned in the book. It reminds me a bit of Stephen Donaldson’s baroque cycle, which are also some of my favorite books!
